Trade potential

The total volume of goods sold outside the country from ATU Gagauzia in 2019 amounted to 1985 million lei, which is more than in 2018 by 15%. Gagauzia accounted for 5.6% of the total export volume of the Republic of Moldova. In 2019 economic agents of Gagauzia exported to 60 countries.

In the structure of the total export volume, 92,2% are occupied by 6 groups of goods: alcoholic beverages (44,5%), knitwear (19,7%), cereals (11,2%), glass and glass products (5,0%), vegetable products (7,1%), oilseeds and fruits (4,7%).

In the structure of imports by groups of goods, supplies of boilers and equipment (23,8%), clothing (15,3%), fuel and oil (7,3%), timber and wood products (6,0%), transport (10,9%), plastics and plastic products (4,7%), glass and glass products (3,5%).

The share of 8 countries in 2019 accounted for 86.4% of sales in total exports (1714.4 million lei): Turkey-515.4 million lei (26%), Russia-344.2 million lei (17.3%), Romania-295.9 million lei (14.9%), Belarussia-188 million lei (9.5%), Georgia-125 million lei (6.3%), Poland-98.0 million lei (4.9%), Italy-78.8 million lei (4%), Ukraine-69 million lei (3.5%).
The 7 largest importing countries accounted for 1428.1 million lei (88.5%) of total imports: Turkey-757 million lei (46.9%), Ukraine-208.3 million lei (12.9%), Russia-166.2 million lei (10.3%), Belarussia-91.3 million lei (5.7%), China-89.2 million lei (5.5%), Italy-61.9 million lei (3.8%), Romania-54.2 million lei (3.4%).

The Republic of Moldova has signed 43 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), all of them are valid for Gagauzia, including:
DCFTA Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the European Union - 500 million consumers;
CIS Free Trade Agreement with CIS countries - 250 million consumers;
FTA Free Trade Agreement with Turkey - 80 million consumers;
CEFTA Central European Free Trade Agreement (Moldova, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and UNMIK (Kosovo) - 30 million consumers;
GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) - 60 million consumers.
Competitive advantages of the free trade agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Turkey

The agreement signed between the Republic of Moldova and Turkey, which entered into force on November 1, 2016, provides a competitive advantage for both parties. The current situation, shown in the table below, describes the actual trade relations between Turkey and Russia, governed by the indicated import tariffs. Starting from November 1, 2016, the Republic of Moldova can act as a commercial and industrial intermediary between Turkish and Russian companies, since Turkish companies located in the country will be able to export to Russia duty-free.
